Troubleshooting
In short
Run /status first. Nine problems in ten are one of two things: Bastion's role isn't at the top of the role list, or it's missing a permission. /status tells you which.
Bastion isn't responding
You type / and Bastion's commands are missing, or a command does nothing.
Check it's in the server
Look for Bastion in the member list. If it isn't there, invite it again.
Check it's online
If Bastion shows as offline, wait a few minutes. Your settings are safe and protection resumes when it returns.
Restart Discord
New slash commands sometimes take a moment to appear. Close Discord fully and open it again.
Check who you are
/setup,/status,/lockdown,/verificationand/appealsare only shown to people with Manage Server, and/backupto administrators. Seeing a command doesn't always mean you can run it:/setup,/verification setup,/appeals unblockand a server-wide lockdown need the owner, a trusted person or an Administrator. Also make sure @everyone, or your role, has Use Application Commands in that channel.Invite it again
If commands never appear, use the invite link once more. You don't need to kick Bastion first, and your settings are kept.
Bastion isn't punishing anyone
Someone spammed or deleted channels and Bastion did nothing. Work down this list:
- Is the module on? Open it in the dashboard.
- Is the person above Bastion? Bastion can only act on people whose top role is below its own. See Role too low, below.
- Is the person the owner or trusted? They're never punished.
- Is their role or the channel ignored? Check the two ignore lists in Automod. Automod also skips staff with Manage Messages and anyone with a moderator role.
- Did they really go over the limit? Two deleted channels in a minute is under the default limit of three. Seven in an hour is under the default of eight. One message a second builds heat slowly.
- Is the action set to Just tell me? Some Join Gate and Anti-Raid settings only report.
- Is a permission missing? Run
/status.
Role too low
Discord never lets a bot touch someone with a higher role. If Bastion's role sits low in the list, Bastion can't touch an attacker above it.
Open Server Settings, then Roles
Find the role called Bastion.
Drag it to the very top
Above admin roles and above other bots.
Save, then run /status
The role check should now pass.
If you can't drag it, your own top role is too low. Ask the server owner.
Missing permissions
Run /status. Bastion names each permission it's missing. Tick those on the Bastion role in Server Settings, Roles. What each one is for is on the permissions page.
If the role has the permission but one channel still fails, that channel has its own rule blocking Bastion. Open the channel's permissions and allow the Bastion role there.
I can't change a setting
The page opens, but everything is greyed out, or saving says only the server owner or someone on their trusted list can change this.
That's how it's meant to work. Anti-Nuke, the Join Gate, Anti-Raid, Verification, Logs, Backups, the People page and the security level can only be changed by the server owner and trusted people. Other admins see those pages read-only. Having Administrator in Discord doesn't change that.
- You're an admin, not the owner. Ask the owner to make the change. You can still change Automod and Moderation yourself, apart from Accept appeals, Where appeals go and Where reports go.
- You're trusted but can't change the trusted list. Only the owner can.
- You're the owner and it still fails. Sign out and back in with the Discord account that owns the server. If ownership was only just transferred, wait a minute and refresh.
- A setting is marked Pro. It needs Bastion Pro, whoever you are. Pressing it opens a prompt that explains Pro and has the buttons to buy it. Server changes on the Logs page, Names containing blocked words in the Join Gate and Kick people who do not verify are all Pro.
The full table is on the dashboard page.
A command says only the owner, trusted people and administrators can do this
/setup, /verification setup, /appeals unblock, /lockdown start, /lockdown roles and /lockdown joins need the server owner, a trusted person or someone with Administrator. Manage Server isn't enough. /lockdown end needs the same while a server-wide lockdown is running. You can still lock one channel with /lockdown channel. See the command list.
Bastion refused my ban or kick
Bans, kicks and quarantines made with Bastion's commands and right-click actions count towards the server's Anti-Nuke limits, per moderator. On Balanced that's 5 bans a minute or 16 an hour. Kicks and quarantines are counted together, and they get 5 a minute or 16 an hour as well. When you reach either number, Bastion refuses the action and tells you which limit it was. It also reports it in the security log and applies the anti-nuke punishment to you, which is quarantine by default.
- It was a mistake. The owner or another moderator runs
/quarantine removeon you to give your roles back. - You really need to remove many people. Ask the owner or a trusted person to do it. They aren't limited. Or raise Banning members and Kicking members under Advanced settings in Anti-Nuke.
- It said you have timed out 10 people in the last minute. Timeouts have their own limit of 10 a minute for each moderator. The timeout was refused and nothing else happened. Nobody is punished for this one. Wait a minute and try again.
- /purge said you have used it 5 times.
/purgeis limited to 5 uses a minute for each moderator. Wait a minute and run it again. Nobody is punished for this one.
Right-click commands aren't showing
You right-click a member or a message and can't find Warn, Ban or Report to moderators.
- Look inside Apps. Bastion's right-click commands are in the Apps submenu, not in the main right-click list. On a phone, press and hold a message, or open a member's profile, then tap Apps.
- Give it a few minutes. After Bastion is added or updated, new commands can take a few minutes to reach your Discord. Close Discord fully and open it again.
- Check the right kind of target. Warn, Timeout, Kick, Ban and Quarantine appear on members. Report to moderators and Delete newer messages appear on messages.
- Check Use Application Commands. If Apps is missing in one channel only, @everyone or your role isn't allowed to use application commands there.
Everyone sees the five moderator actions. Seeing one doesn't mean you can use it. See right-click actions.
Reports go nowhere
A member reports a message and no post appears for staff.
- The member was told the server has not chosen where reports go. Bastion has no channel it can post in. Open Moderation in the dashboard and pick one under Where reports go. If that's empty, Bastion tries your Moderator actions channel, then Security alerts.
- A channel is chosen and still nothing. Bastion needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in it.
- The member was told reports are switched off. Switch on Let members report messages on the Moderation page.
- The member was thanked and you see no new post. That message was already reported. Look for the earlier post. Its Reported by line now reads like Alex and 2 others.
- The member was refused. Own messages, bot and webhook messages, and messages more than 14 days old can't be reported. A member must have been in the server for 10 minutes. Each member can send 3 reports in 10 minutes.
- The member was told the moderators already have a lot of reports. A server gets at most 20 new report posts in 10 minutes. It clears by itself.
See member reports.
The appeal link says the server doesn't take appeals
The page reads This server doesn't take appeals here. It means one of three things, and the page deliberately doesn't say which.
- Appeals are switched off. They're off by default. The owner opens Moderation in the dashboard, switches on Accept appeals and saves.
- The number at the end of the link is wrong. It must be the server's ID. Copy the link again from the message Bastion sent.
- Bastion is no longer in that server.
A genuine appeal link starts with https://bastionbot.xyz/appeal/ and signs you in on discord.com. If yours doesn't, don't use it. See appeals.
Signing in to the dashboard
There's no Bastion sign-in page. Pressing Dashboard, or opening any dashboard or appeal link while signed out, takes you straight to Discord's approval screen.
- Discord opened and you didn't expect it. That's meant to happen. Check the address bar says discord.com, then approve.
- You see a page called Sign in to Bastion. You cancelled on Discord, or the sign-in failed. The page says which. Press Continue with Discord to try again.
- It says Discord wouldn't show us your servers. Press Sign in again.
- The address bar doesn't say discord.com. Stop. Don't approve anything or type a password. Bastion never asks for your Discord password.
My server isn't in the list
- You don't manage it. The list shows servers where you're the owner or have Administrator or Manage Server. If you were only just given the permission, wait a minute and refresh.
- Bastion isn't in it yet. Look under Add Bastion to another server and press Add next to it. Discord opens. Once you approve, you land back on that server's setup page.
- You cancelled in Discord. You go back to the server list with a note saying Bastion wasn't added. Press Add to try again.
- You just added Bastion. The list recognises a newly added server straight away. There's no need to wait.
- You're signed in with the wrong Discord account. Sign out and sign in with the account that manages the server.
A moderator can't approve an appeal or undo a ban
Bastion says only the server owner or a trusted person can approve this one, or undo this one.
- Who placed it matters. If Bastion itself, the owner or a trusted person placed the ban or timeout, only the owner and trusted people can approve the appeal or use
/unbanand/untimeouton it. Moderators can still deny the appeal. - It says you have approved 5 appeals in the last 10 minutes. A moderator can approve 5 appeals in 10 minutes. Wait a few minutes or ask the owner.
- Someone was blocked from appealing by mistake. Run
/appeals unblock user_id:with their user ID. It needs the owner, a trusted person or an Administrator. - Staff got one post saying appeals are waiting. More than 25 arrived within an hour. Follow the link to the dashboard and press Open Appeals to read them. A server can have at most 40 waiting.
Bastion punished my bot
There are two different causes.
- It was kicked the moment it was added. The Join Gate removes bots added by anyone who isn't the owner or a trusted person. It does the same when it can't see who added the bot, which happens if Bastion is missing View Audit Log. Have the owner invite it.
- It was kicked later, while working. It went over an Anti-Nuke limit. See the next section.
My ticket bot got kicked
Ticket bots open a channel for every ticket and delete it when the ticket closes. On a busy day that reaches 6 creates or 3 deletes in a minute, or 20 creates or 8 deletes in an hour, which looks exactly like a nuke. Bastion kicks a bot that does this.
Pick one of these fixes:
- Add the bot to trusted people. The owner opens People in the dashboard and pastes the bot's user ID under Trusted people. It then skips the limits. Only do this for a well-known bot you rely on.
- Raise the two limits. In Anti-Nuke, open Advanced settings and raise both numbers for Creating channels and Deleting channels. Set a minute above your busiest minute, and an hour above your busiest hour.
Then invite the bot back. Have the owner or a trusted person do it, so the Join Gate lets it in.
Bastion punished a real person
Check the log channel or run /cases on them to see the reason. Undo it with /untimeout, /unban or /quarantine remove. If Bastion placed the ban or timeout itself, only the owner or a trusted person can use /unban or /untimeout on it. If it keeps happening, move to the Relaxed level or switch off the one filter that keeps firing.
Bastion isn't doing anything.
Run /status. If the role and permission checks pass and the modules are on, it's working. A quiet server gives it nothing to do.
Names containing blocked words or Kick people who do not verify switched itself off.
Both are part of Pro. They switch off when a server is on the free plan. The rest of the Join Gate and Verification keep working.
Verify doesn't give the role.
The member role is level with or above Bastion's role. Move Bastion up. See verification.
Verify says verification is misconfigured.
The role Bastion hands out has gained powerful permissions, so Bastion refuses to give it to everyone who verifies. Take the dangerous permissions off that role, or pick a plain member role with /verification setup. See verification.
I got a message saying protection was weakened.
Someone switched off a protection or added a trusted person in the dashboard. The alert names who. If you didn't expect it, switch it back and check who holds Manage Server. See the dashboard.
Deleted messages aren't being logged.
Message logs need Pro and a channel under Edited and deleted messages on the Logs page. Messages from bots and messages automod removed are left out. See logs.
Nothing appears in my log channel.
Bastion needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links there. See logs.
Banned people aren't getting an appeal link.
Accept appeals and Tell people when they are punished must both be on, on the Moderation page. Kicks and quarantines never include the link, and a person with private messages closed can't be sent it. See appeals.
The server changes log is missing things.
Bastion needs View Audit Log. Threads and joins are off by default, and things Bastion did itself are in the security log instead. The log needs Pro. Changes are grouped into one post every couple of seconds, up to 15 in a post. During a flood it sends at most 4 posts every 10 seconds, then one line saying how many more changes weren't shown. See logs.
My invite links stopped working.
Anti-Raid paused invites during a raid. They return when it ends.
I'm still stuck.
