Discord AutoMod rules
In short
Discord has its own filter that blocks a message before anyone sees it. The Discord AutoMod page in the dashboard lets you add, switch off and delete those rules without opening Server Settings. It's free.
What it does
Discord AutoMod and Bastion's Automod are two different things that work well together.
| Compared | Discord AutoMod | Bastion's Automod |
|---|---|---|
| When it acts | Before the message is posted. | After the message is posted. |
| What it does | Blocks the message. | Deletes the spam and times the sender out. |
| Remembers repeat offenders | No. | Yes, with heat and strikes. |
| Best for | Words nobody should ever see. | Spam, floods, invites and scam links. |
Use both. Let Discord block the worst words outright, and let Bastion deal with the people who keep trying.
Turn it on
Open Discord AutoMod in the dashboard
It's in the server's menu. You see every AutoMod rule the server already has.
Pick a rule under Add a rule
There are four kinds, listed below. Only the server owner and trusted people see this section.
Press Add this rule
Bastion creates the rule in Discord straight away and it shows up in the list.
Bastion needs the Manage Server permission to manage AutoMod rules. If it's missing, the page says so.
The four rules
| Rule | What it blocks | How many |
|---|---|---|
| Block mention spam | Any message that pings more than 20 people or roles at once. | One |
| Block commonly flagged words | Profanity, sexual content and slurs, using Discord's own word lists. | One |
| Block suspected spam | Messages Discord thinks are spam. | One |
| Block custom words | Messages that contain any word or phrase on your list. Up to 100 words, one per line, each 1 to 60 characters. | Up to six |
The numbers in the last column are Discord's limits, not Bastion's. A rule added here blocks the message and does nothing else. It doesn't time anyone out or post an alert.
Changing a rule
- Switch off pauses a rule without deleting it. Switch on brings it back.
- Edit words changes the list on a custom words rule. Press Save words when you're done.
- Delete rule removes it from Discord for good. Messages it was blocking get through again.
Changes are made in Discord at once. The audit log in Discord shows Bastion made the change and includes the user ID of the person who pressed the button.
Rules you can only look at
Some rules made in Discord do more than this page can show. They're listed with a note and no buttons, so nothing is lost by accident. Change them in Discord under Server Settings, AutoMod.
- A rule that also sends an alert or times the sender out.
- A custom words rule that uses patterns or an allow list.
- A custom words rule with more than 100 words.
- A flagged words rule with an allow list.
- A rule that checks something other than messages, such as member profiles.
Who can use the page
Anyone who can open the dashboard can see the rules. Only the server owner and trusted people can add, change or delete them.
Should I use this or Bastion's blocked words?
Both have a place. A Discord rule stops the message from ever appearing. Bastion's Blocked words add heat, delete the message and time the sender out. For the worst words, use both.
It says the server already has a rule of this kind.
Discord allows one mention spam rule, one flagged words rule and one spam rule. Delete or change the existing one.
It says we couldn't load this server's AutoMod rules.
Reload the page in a few seconds. If it says Bastion isn't allowed, give the Bastion role the Manage Server permission.
Discord wouldn't accept the rule.
Some kinds need a Community server, and each kind has a limit. Check Server Settings, AutoMod in Discord.
I changed a rule in Discord and the page still shows the old one.
The list is remembered for 15 seconds. Reload the page.
Is this Pro?
No. It's free.
