About this feature: Backups

In short

A backup is a saved copy of your roles, channels and permissions, not your messages or members. Press Back up now on the Backups page of the dashboard, or run /backup create. Restore brings back whatever's gone missing and never deletes anything. Backups are a Pro feature.

What's in a backup

SavedDetails
RolesName, colour, permissions, position, and whether the role is shown separately or can be mentioned. Roles that belong to bots aren't saved. Up to 250 roles.
ChannelsName, type, category, position, topic, slowmode, age restriction, and voice settings such as bitrate and user limit. Threads aren't saved. Up to 500 channels.
Channel permissionsEvery permission override for every role and member on every channel.
Basic server settingsServer name, verification level, default notification setting, content filter and AFK timeout. These are saved with the backup, but a restore doesn't change them.

What isn't in a backup

  • Messages. Discord doesn't let bots save or restore messages.
  • Members. People can't be re-added to a server. They have to join again themselves.
  • Who had which role. A restore rebuilds the roles. It doesn't hand them back out.
  • Bans, emoji, stickers and webhooks.

CarefulA backup rebuilds the structure of your server. It isn't a copy of your community. Think of it as the floor plan, not the furniture.

Make your first backup

  1. Get Pro

Backups are part of Bastion Pro.

  2. Press Back up now

It's at the top of the Backups page in the dashboard. Or run /backup create in Discord. Either way it takes a few seconds. You can keep up to 10 manual backups.

  3. Check it exists

The new backup appears under Saved backups on the page, marked Manual, with how many roles and channels it holds. In Discord, run /backup list.

  4. Switch on automatic backups

On the Backups page in the dashboard, turn on automatic backups so you don't have to remember.

The Backups page

Everything the /backup commands do can be done from the Backups page in the dashboard.

Back up nowSaves a new manual backup.Pro
RestoreRecreates the roles and channels that are missing compared with that backup. Asks you to confirm first. Nothing is deleted.Pro
DeleteRemoves that backup for good. Asks you to confirm first.Free and Pro

The page lists your 25 newest backups. Each shows its name, whether it was Manual or Automatic, how many roles and channels it holds, and when it was made.

How the buttons work

The dashboard doesn't touch your server itself. It asks the bot to do it, and the bot answers.

  1. You press a button. It changes to Working on it.
  2. The bot checks that you're the server owner or a trusted person, then does the job.
  3. A few seconds later the result appears next to the button, such as Backup saved: 24 roles and 61 channels.
  4. The request is listed under Recent requests at the bottom of the page as Done or Failed, with the same sentence.
  • Only the server owner and trusted people see the buttons. Other admins can read the list.
  • If the page says Bastion has not answered yet, the bot is offline or restarting. Try again in a minute.
  • A big restore can take longer than a few seconds. The request shows Working on it until it's finished.
  • Only one restore runs at a time. A second one is refused with a note to wait.

Restore a backup

  1. Stop the cause first

Make sure whoever did the damage is quarantined or banned. Otherwise they'll do it again.

  2. Pick a backup

On the Backups page, find one from before the damage. In Discord, run /backup list and note its number. Number 1 is the newest.

  3. Restore it

Press Restore next to it, then Restore this backup. Or run /backup restore with the number, or with nothing for the newest, and confirm with the button. Bastion recreates the roles and channels that are missing, with their saved permissions. Anything that still exists is left exactly as it is.

  4. Hand roles back out

Rebuilt roles are new roles. Give them to your staff and members again, and check the role order in Server Settings.

A saved role or channel counts as still there if it exists, or if one with the same name does. Only the rest is recreated. The Backups page in the dashboard also holds the automatic backup settings.

TipBastion can only give a rebuilt role the permissions it holds itself, and it can't place roles above its own. Keep its role at the top with all of its permissions. See the setup guide.

Automatic restore after a nuke

With panic mode on, Bastion recreates deleted roles and channels from your newest backup by itself when Anti-Nuke catches a burst of channel or role deletes. This is the reason to turn on automatic backups: the copy it uses is at most a day old.

Commands

CommandWhat it does
/backup createSaves a new backup now. Up to 10 manual backups.
/backup listShows your saved backups, newest first, with a number each.
/backup restoreRecreates what's missing from the backup with that number. Nothing is deleted.
/backup deleteRemoves the backup with that number for good.
Can it bring back deleted messages?

No. No bot can. Discord doesn't allow it.

Can it bring back banned or kicked members?

No. Unban them with /unban and they can join again with an invite.

Will a restore delete channels I made since the backup?

No. A restore never deletes or changes anything you have now. It only recreates roles and channels that are missing.

Who can use the backup commands?

The owner, trusted people and anyone with Administrator.

Who can use the buttons on the Backups page?

The owner and trusted people only. That's stricter than the commands on purpose. An Administrator who isn't trusted can still run /backup in Discord.

I pressed Back up now and it says Bastion has not answered yet.

The bot didn't pick the request up within about 30 seconds. It's offline or restarting. Wait a minute and press it again.

What happens to my backups if Pro ends?

Automatic backups stop, and making or restoring a backup stops working. Your saved backups aren't deleted, and you can still delete them yourself from the Backups page. Ask support if you need help removing them.
