Remembering scam messages
In short
Not every scam has a link. Some just ask you to message someone. Mark one with Mark as scam and Bastion remembers what it said, so the same scam is removed the next time. It never keeps the message itself.
How it works
- A moderator right-clicks a scam message, then chooses Apps and Mark as scam.
- Bastion deletes it, times out the sender, and remembers the wording.
- If the same wording is sent again, in your server, Bastion removes it and applies your action for A scam link. The log post has a Not a scam button.
What counts as the same
Before remembering, Bastion cleans the message up. Capital letters, spacing, punctuation, emoji and invisible characters are ignored. Look-alike letters from other alphabets are treated as the letters they imitate. A link, a mention or a number becomes a plain placeholder, so a new link or a changed amount does not matter.
With Close matches too, a message that is nearly the same also counts: a few words moved, swapped or added. With The same wording only, only the identical wording counts.
What is never remembered
- Short or ordinary messages. A message needs at least 4 words and 25 letters once cleaned up, and cannot be mostly links, mentions or numbers. Marking one still removes that copy, and Bastion says it was not remembered.
- The message itself. Only a fingerprint is kept: a code worked out from the cleaned-up wording and a small set of word codes. It cannot be turned back into the message.
- Who sent it, where it was sent, or which server marked it by name.
| Setting | What it does | Default |
|---|---|---|
| Remember messages marked as scams | Switches it on or off. | On |
| How alike a message must be | Close matches too, or the same wording only. | Close matches too |
| Use the shared list of scam messages | Use and add to Bastion's shared list. Pro only. Off means your server only uses its own marks. | Off |
Your server and other servers
- Your own marks work in your server at once, for the same wording and, if you chose Close matches, for near copies.
- On the free plan marks stay in your server. They are deleted when you stop using Bastion.
- With Pro and sharing on, a mark joins the shared list. Other servers act on it only once at least 3 separate servers have marked the same wording. One server can never put a message on every server's list.
- Near copies from other servers count only for entries that have never been corrected.
If it gets one wrong
Press Not a scam under the log post. You need to be able to ban with Bastion. Every server's mark of that message is forgotten, and it then takes one more server than before for the list to trust it again. This does not undo the punishment: use /unban or /untimeout for that.
Limits
- Staff, trusted people, bots, and roles and channels Automod ignores are never checked.
- A fingerprint is kept for 180 days after it was last seen, then forgotten.
- It only matches wording. A scam that is reworded completely is a new scam: mark it too.
TipTry it with test mode first. Automod will tell you which messages it would have removed.
