Test mode

In short

In test mode a module decides exactly as normal but takes no action. It posts "Would have..." in your log channel and lists it on the dashboard. It's free. While it's on, that module isn't protecting you.

What it does

Automod, Join Gate, Anti-Raid and Anti-Nuke each have a Test mode switch under Advanced settings. With it on, the module works out what it would do and then does nothing. Nobody is timed out, kicked or banned, no message is deleted, no invite is paused and nobody gets a direct message.

Instead, Bastion posts a line like this in the module's log channel:

TipWould have timed out Sam for 5 minutes: sending messages quickly.

Check its work

  1. Switch on Test mode

Open the module in the dashboard, open Advanced settings, switch on Test mode and save.

  2. Let it run

A day or two of normal chat is usually enough.

  3. Read the list

The module's page shows how many times Bastion would have acted in the last 7 days, and the 20 most recent.

  4. Mark each one

Press This was right or This was wrong. Bastion keeps a count of both so you can see how well the settings fit.

  5. Switch Test mode off

When you're happy, switch it off so the module acts for real.

CarefulA module in test mode is not protecting you. Your security score drops and the Overview shows a banner until you switch it off. Anti-Nuke in test mode will not stop an attack, so only use it for a short while with someone watching.

Anti-Nuke is stricter

  • Only the server owner can switch it on. Not a trusted person and not a recovery owner. Everyone else sees the switch greyed out. Anyone who can edit Anti-Nuke can switch it off.
  • It ends by itself after 24 hours. The Anti-Nuke page shows when. After that Anti-Nuke acts for real again, even if the switch still looks on.

Test mode for Automod, Join Gate and Anti-Raid has neither rule. It stays on until you switch it off.

Good to know

  • Test mode entries are kept for 30 days.
  • A filter set to Just tell me still logs as normal in test mode, because it never does anything else.
  • A raid in test mode still gets a raid report. It shows what would have happened to each account.
  • At most 20 test mode lines a minute are posted to a log channel, so a raid can't flood it.
