Member reports

In short

Any member who's been in the server for 10 minutes can right-click a message, choose Apps, then Report to moderators. Your staff get it in a channel with buttons to delete the message, time the author out for an hour or dismiss it. Reports are on by default.

How a member reports a message

  1. Open the message menu

On a computer, right-click the message. On a phone, press and hold the message.

  2. Choose Apps

    Then choose Report to moderators.

  3. Say what's wrong, if you want

A short form opens with one box: What is wrong with it? You can leave it empty. It takes up to 300 characters.

  4. Press Submit

Bastion replies Thanks. The moderators have been told. Only you can see that reply.

Nothing is sent to staff until the form is submitted. The person who wrote the message isn't told who reported it. Staff can see who did.

TipTell your members this exists. A line in your rules channel is enough: right-click a message, Apps, Report to moderators.

What can't be reported

RuleWhat the member is told
Your own message. You cannot report your own message.
A message from a bot or a webhook, or one of Discord's own system messages.Messages from bots and webhooks cannot be reported.
A message more than 14 days old. That message is more than 14 days old.
A member who joined the server less than 10 minutes ago.You need to have been in this server for 10 minutes before you can report a message.
More than 3 reports from one member in 10 minutes, in one server. You have sent 3 reports in the last 10 minutes.
More than 20 new report posts in one server in 10 minutes, from all members together. The moderators already have a lot of reports.

In each case Bastion suggests telling a moderator directly. These numbers are fixed and can't be changed.

The 10 minute wait stops accounts that join only to flood your staff with reports. The limit of 20 counts new staff posts only. Reporting a message that already has an open report is never refused by it.

What staff see

Each report is one post titled Message reported. It shows:

  • The text of the message, quoted, up to 1000 characters, with a Jump to message link.
  • Who wrote it and Reported by: name, mention and user ID for each.
  • Where: the channel.
  • Attachments: how many the message had.
  • What is wrong with it: the reporter's own words, or They did not say.

Mentions in the quoted text don't ping anyone. Links in the reporter's reason and in the quoted text are shown as plain text you can't click. That's on purpose, so a report can't be used to send staff a scam link. Use Jump to message to see the original.

ButtonWhat it doesWho can press it
Delete messageDeletes the reported message and closes the report. If the message has already gone, the report is closed anyway.Moderators, or anyone with Manage Messages in the channel the message is in.
Timeout 1 hourTimes the author out for one hour and saves a case. The reason given is Sent a message that was reported to the moderators. It never repeats what the reporter wrote.Moderators, or anyone with Timeout Members.
DismissCloses the report. Nothing is done to the message or its author.Moderators, or anyone with Manage Messages or Timeout Members.

Moderators means the owner, trusted people, anyone with Administrator and anyone holding one of your moderator roles.

Once a button is pressed, the post changes to Report handled or Report dismissed, says who did what, and the buttons are removed. Only the first press counts. Each button does one thing. To delete the message and time the author out, press one button and do the other by hand or with a right-click action.

The Timeout button works exactly like /timeout. The role order applies and the author gets the usual private message. It doesn't count towards the kick limit and can never get a moderator punished. It counts towards the timeout limit of 10 a minute for each moderator. Over that, the timeout is refused with a message and the report stays open. See moderation.

The same message reported twice

A message only ever gets one staff post. If more people report it while the report is still open, the Reported by line keeps the first reporter and adds a count. For example: Reported by Alex and 2 others.

If staff have already dealt with the message, a later reporter is told the moderators have already looked at it, and nothing new is posted.

When the text is hidden

Sometimes the reported message is in a channel that's more private than the channel reports go to. A report from a staff-only channel that lands in a channel all your helpers can read is one example. Bastion then leaves the text out and says it's hidden because the channel is more private. The Jump to message link is still there for people who can open it.

Text from a private thread is always hidden. To see the text every time, send reports to a channel that only people who can read all your channels can see.

Choose the channel, or switch reports off

Open the Moderation page of the dashboard and find the group called Member reports.

Bastion needs View Channel, Send Messages and Embed Links in that channel. To delete reported messages it also needs Manage Messages in the channels your members talk in.

CarefulKeep the reports channel private. It shows who reported whom.

What's stored

For each report Bastion stores the IDs of the message and its channel, the author's ID, the IDs of the people who reported it, the reason typed into the form, and who dealt with it. Each report is deleted after 30 days. The text of the reported message is never saved. It appears in the staff post in your Discord channel and nowhere else. See privacy and data.

I can't find Report to moderators.

It's inside the Apps submenu, not in the main list. If Apps is missing, Bastion's commands haven't reached your Discord yet. Restart Discord and try again. See troubleshooting.

The member was told this server has not chosen where reports go.

Bastion has no channel it can post in. Pick one under Where reports go, or set a Moderator actions or Security alerts channel on the Logs page. Check Bastion can view it, send messages and embed links there.

Will the person I reported know it was me?

No. Your report is only shown to staff, and the replies you get are private. If the author is timed out, the reason doesn't include what you wrote.

Can a member spam reports?

Each member can send 3 reports in 10 minutes, and must have been in the server for 10 minutes first. A server gets at most 20 new report posts in 10 minutes. Reporting the same message again does nothing new.

I just joined and can't report.

You need to have been in the server for 10 minutes. If it's urgent, tell a moderator directly.

A link in a report can't be clicked.

That's on purpose. Links in the reason and the quoted text are shown as plain text. Press Jump to message to open the original message.

Can the Timeout button get me quarantined?

No. Timeouts never count towards the kick limit. You can time out 10 people a minute. After that the button is refused with a message and nothing else happens.

Delete message says Bastion could not delete it.

Give Bastion the Manage Messages permission in the channel the message is in, then press the button again. The report stays open.

The button says that report no longer exists.

Reports are deleted after 30 days. Deal with the message by hand.

Is this the same as Discord's own Report Message?

No. Discord's report goes to Discord. This one goes to your own moderators.
