Getting started

In short

Invite Bastion, drag its role to the top of your role list, run /setup, then pick a security level in the dashboard. That's the whole job.

What Bastion is

Bastion is a security bot for Discord servers. It watches for the things that wreck a server and stops them, even while you're asleep.

It guards against three main problems:

  • Nukes. Someone with power wrecks the server: they delete your channels and roles and ban everyone. See Anti-Nuke.
  • Raids. Lots of accounts join at once to spam or harass. See Anti-Raid.
  • Spam. Message floods, mass pings, invite links and scam links. See Automod.

Your staff also get moderation commands and right-click actions, with a case history. Members can report messages, banned people can appeal, and new members can be asked to prove they're human.

Set up in three minutes

  1. Invite Bastion

Press Add to Discord on the website. Or press Dashboard, then Add next to your server. Discord opens and asks you to approve. You need to be the server owner, or have Administrator or Manage Server. Leave the permissions ticked. Each one is explained on the permissions page. Once you approve, you land back on that server's setup page in the dashboard. If you cancel, you go back to the server list.

  2. Move Bastion's role to the top

In Discord, open Server Settings, then Roles. Drag the Bastion role above every other role. Discord never lets a bot act on someone with a higher role, so this step matters more than any other.

  3. Run /setup

Type /setup in any channel. You need to be the owner, a trusted person or an Administrator. Bastion creates the Quarantined role and a private channel called bastion-logs, then checks its role position and permissions. It tells you if anything needs fixing.

  4. Open the dashboard

Press Dashboard on the website. There's no sign-in page: you go straight to Discord's approval screen. Check the address bar says discord.com, then approve. Choose your server and press Finish setup. Only the owner and trusted people see that button. The wizard asks you to pick a security level: Relaxed, Balanced or Strict. If you aren't sure, pick Balanced.

TipYou can change every setting later. The security level is only a starting point. See the setup wizard for what each level does.

What's on straight away

Once setup is done, these protect your server with nothing more to do:

Verification is off until you set it up. Logs go to the bastion-logs channel that /setup made. At first only Bastion and administrators can see that channel, so let your staff roles view it.

Check it worked

Run /status. It shows your security score out of 100 and a list of anything still to fix. A fresh Balanced setup with the role at the top and a log channel set scores 95. Switching on verification gets you the last 5.

Will Bastion punish me?

No. The server owner is always trusted and is never punished. You can also add a few trusted people.

Is it free?

Yes. All of the protection above is free. Pro adds backups, panic mode, message logs, the server changes log and a few extras.

I pressed Dashboard and ended up on Discord. Is that right?

Yes. Bastion has no sign-in page or password of its own. Check the address bar says discord.com before you approve. A page called Sign in to Bastion only appears if you cancel or the sign-in fails.

I can't find /setup.

Slash commands can take a moment to show up after an invite. /setup is only shown to people with Manage Server, and only the owner, trusted people and Administrators can run it. If it's still missing, see troubleshooting.

Do I need to know how bots work?

No. Pick a level and leave it. Each page in these docs starts with the short answer.
